A sedentary lifestyle is widely discussed for its health risks in most medical quarters. The public is well aware that physical inactivity can increase the risk of diabetes, heart disease and strokes. It can reduce the quality of life and is more frequently associated with fatal outcomes. However, there is still some confusion among the public as to what constitutes a sedentary lifestyle. Is it simply a lack of defined exercise periods? Is it just about sitting for too many hours in a day? Definition of a Sedentary Lifestyle In a broad sense, a sedentary lifestyle is where a person does not exercise on a regular basis and is minimally active during the course of a regular day. It is sometimes referred to as sitting disease because a person is limited to minimal physical activity as is the case when sitting. This type of lifestyle has become common these days as technology often limits physical activity and related tasks need to be conducted in the sitting position. It correlates with the increase in obesity and associated diseases that are seen in more developed nations. There is no strict definition of a sedentary lifestyle. It includes a lifestyle with less than [...]

With over two-thirds of the American population being obese, the demand for weight loss methods is ever growing. There are many ways to lose weight and while some can be safe, others can be dangerous or even deadly. The main problem with some of the more dangerous methods is that weight loss is too rapid. While this may seem desirable, rapid weight loss can be dangerous, even deadly, and usually does not last. What is rapid weight loss? Losing weight at a rate of 1 to 2 pounds (around 0.5kg to 1kg) per week is considered to be safe. Therefore losing weight at a faster rate is considered to be rapid. This can be relative as people who are morbidly obese may find weight loss at a much faster rate and this may still be safe. Bariatric (weight loss) surgery may be an exception where the weight loss may be much higher but is still considered safe. However, it is important to note that on some relatively safe weight loss methods there may be an initial rate of weight loss that can exceed 2 pounds per week. This is usually short lived, lasting only a week or two. Then the [...]

Your diet does more than just fuel your body—it plays a significant role in shaping your mental health and overall mood. Emerging research has revealed a strong connection between nutrition and emotional well-being, suggesting that what you eat can affect how you feel, think, and even react to stress. In this article, we’ll explore the link between diet and mental health and offer tips on how to eat for better emotional well-being. The Gut-Brain Connection: How Your Digestive System Affects Your Mind It’s no secret that what you eat impacts your physical health, but did you know it also affects your brain? The gut and the brain are deeply connected through the gut-brain axis, a pathway of communication between the two. Your gut contains billions of bacteria that help digest food, and this microbiome is critical to mental health. A balanced gut microbiome helps regulate mood-enhancing neurotransmitters like serotonin. In fact, around 90% of serotonin, often referred to as the “feel-good” neurotransmitter, is produced in the gut. This means a healthy gut can play a vital role in reducing feelings of anxiety and depression. The Role of Nutrients in Mental Health The nutrients you consume can have a profound effect [...]

Discover comprehensive information on Type 1 Diabetes, including causes, symptoms, management strategies, and treatments. Learn how to live well with Type 1 diabetes and understand its long-term effects. What is Type 1 Diabetes? Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is a chronic autoimmune condition where the pancreas produces little to no insulin. Insulin is a hormone crucial for helping the body use glucose for energy. T1D typically develops in childhood or adolescence but can occur at any age. Causes of Type 1 Diabetes While the exact cause of Type 1 Diabetes remains unknown, several factors contribute to its development: 1.
