Hi Craig. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It is highly advisable that you seek a second opinion from another gastroenterologist, who may consider other investigations. Hopefully you will get the answers that you are looking for. It is possible that your throat condition is unrelated to your inflammatory bowel disease. You may therefore want to follow up with an ENT specialist (otorhinolaryngologist).

I was searching for some answers to my issue with swallowing. I have had trouble all my life and it has gotten worse lately. I have had an upper Endoscopy done and they said everything looks normal, but they didn't take any biopsies and she didn't widen my throat, because I kept coming out of the medicine. I have active inflammatory bowel disease that until now has only been in my colon, however I am low on vitamin B12, D and low on protein as well. This really indicates Crohn's disease and I have had issues with my esophagus with every out break of disease. My doctor just keeps writing me off as having mild UC, but my symptoms don't indicate UC. What on earth will it take to make my doctor come around. I fear I will end up in the hospital before they figure it out. She wants me to stop taking Prednisone, but it is the only thing keeping this disease at bay and I don't want to get super sick to prove it to her. I wish there was a blood test that would test for Crohn's disease that was at least 80% accurate, then that coupled to some other tests I may have my answer. I think when you have IBD one should be super careful about having a colonoscopy as the risk of perforation goes up a lot with active disease. I had one two months ago and now she wants me to have another one done due to my symptoms and I am not going to have one for another two years. I just will not put myself in harms way again. These tests are really hard on me and it takes me a month to recover from all the biopsies that they take. I want to know what I have, but I think it is the wrong place to look. I need a capsule endoscopy done or a barium swallow with small bowel follow through to see if I have issues with my small intestine.

Hi JIim. All of the symptoms you describe may not necessarily be linked to a single condition. it is possible that there are multiple conditions co-existing in your case. As you can see from the article above, there are a host of different causes for esophageal spasms. However, not all these conditions may account for your associated breathing problem. It is therefore advisable that you follow up with your doctor and if possible consult with a gastroenterologist.

Very violent, powerful and frequent yet painless, increasing in ferocity over the years esophageal spasms (especially after eating or lying down in certain positions especially on the back forcing a person to breathe out through their nose and mouth. Also lying on nes back creates weird pain in the back that seems almost like a lung pain or is it a nerve pain. What could all that be?
