Thanks so much for responding. No, there are no other symptoms, i.e. pain, burning, bleeding, etc. No cramping, no abdominal pain, no frequent BMs, or alteration of frequency. Everything seems in perfect working order except for the drainage. Since this is the only apparent symptom I was wondering if this has been discussed before, and perhaps diagnosed? I am in my 60s and have heard other men of similar age mention this happening to them, so it occurred to me it could perhaps be an issue in older adults, and thus a commonly reported condition with a cause as well as a ‘name’.

Hi Gary. You are correct that your current symptoms could be due to teh conditions that you have mentioned. However, if it was colitis then you would have experienced other symptoms by now. You do not mention any pain, burning or bleeding so hemorrhoids may not be the cause here although still a possibility. If your doctor cannot identify any other condition, then a diagnosis of IBS may then be made. Although most people with IBS do experience cramping and/or abdominal pain with frequent bowel movements (in diarrhea-predominant IBS), there are instances where only the alteration in bowel habit is present. You should speak to your family doctor and possibly get a referral to a gastroenterologist or proctologist. Do no be embarrassed as your doctor is trained to deal with these types of symptoms.

Hi Jeanette. Thank you for your input. Yes fiber can be helpful in these cases as it absorbs water and helps form soft and firm stools. This is particularly helpful where there is repeated loose and watery stools which often occurs with a diet low in fiber. Your recommendation would undoubtedly be helpful to other readers.
