Less commonly, it may be a result of an obstruction within the canaliculi thereby preventing the hepatocytes from initiating the flow of bile. This is not a problem with bilirubin excretion due to liver cell damage as is the case with hepatocellular jaundice but rather as a result of bile congestion due to the obstruction.
