Hi Clare. Yes, it is advisable to have it checked up if it is persisting. Leg swelling is not uncommon during pregnancy but sometimes it can be related to heart and kidney problems which may be related to pregnancy. Hopefully it has resolved by now. If not then speak to your doctor.

Hi Kinesha. It may not entirely be swelling but also fat accumulation as well. This is a natural consequence of pregnancy and the hormone changes. As you can read in the article above there are many reasons other than the expected physiological changes with pregnancy that cause leg swelling. However, for it to be isolated only to the thighs is not usually a sign of a problem. Nevertheless discuss it with your doctor.

Hi Donnaw

Swelling is not uncommon following pregnancy, however, if she is experiencing shortness of breath, dizziness and so on along with abnormal swelling then she needs to see a doctor immediately. Swelling will go down anywhere from a few days to weeks, or rarely even months. There are a number of reasons for leg swelling in pregnancy as explained above so it all depends on the case of your daughter's swelling.
