Hi Georgina. If this has started recently then it could be an infection or a flareup of an allergy. It is also possible that this is what is known as allergic rhinitis, which is a long term problem. Most sufferers find that it will aggravate with certain environmental conditions, during certain seasons or with exposure to triggers like dust. Also bouts of sneezing tends to start when you wake up. There is no way of knowing for sure until you consult with a doctor. At this point you should consider seeing an otorhinoloaryngologist (ENT specialist) who may run further tests to confirm the diagnosis.

I sneeze a lot throughout the day and always feel like I have a cold. I have found if I wake up at any point of the night to use the loo, the second I lay back down I have a sneezing fit and my nose will continue to run or sneeze for the next hour and I cannot get back to sleep. I have tried nose sprays, allergy tablets but it doesn't seem to stop it when I lay back down. Any ideas? Thank you

Hi Kaylee. It sounds very much like it is related to allergies. One of the common inhaled allergens is house dust mite feces and these mites cannot be totally eradicated from the home environment. The bedroom and mattress is one of the common areas where these mites thrive. When you inhale the mite's feces (which you cannot see with the naked eye) then it can trigger a reaction in your nose, throat and even lower airways. This can give rise to a host of symptoms like sneezing, an itchy throat or coughing. Speak to your doctor about a referral to an an allergist and further allergen testing may be necessary to verify whether you do have an allergy or not.

I'm 19 and Ive been sneezing kinda alot lately and alot of it is at night. And it makes my nose feel stuffy and right now my nose got a little runny. But I know I'm not sick with a cold or the flu. And when I sneeze it's really strong and powerful and makes my head hurt. Yesterday my left ear felt plugged up, it's been making my throat feel different, sometimes it feels like there's something in my throat only right when I sneeze. I don't have any known allergies but about a year ago, I started constantly coughing at night and it was really affecting my sleep so I went to my doctor and they gave me an inhaler to use as needed. That's the only thing I know of. Is it possible for me to have allergies or something else now? Also, my eyes have been watering too.

Dear Doctor,
I am suffering from excessive sneezing for the last 3 years. This problem is simply ruining my personal and hampering my professional life a lot.
It started 3 years back with severe cough congestion and according to the local homeopath that was sinusitis. I took medicines for like 3 months and I felt very well. But due to sudden shifting from the city I could not continue the same medicines and the problem started again.
Then I consulted one more homeopathic doctor and he said it is allergic rhinitis. I took some medicines prescribed by him but dint get any relief.
Then I visited one more homeopath suggested by my freind. Doctor told me to check the IGE level in my blood which was more than 400. He gave me some immune enhancement pills and blood purification pills. After one month, my problem gone and i stopped taking medicines.
Now after 3 months of relief the problem has started again and even the same medicines are not working now.
I get sneezing fits like twice a week and i sneeze like 100 times a day with continuous runny nose.

Please help what is it exactly. Is this an allergy or I have some problem inside my nose?

Please help.

Hi Aman. You do not state the cause for your condition. Sneezing is a symptom. Not the disease itself. Sneezing can occur in many types of diseases. Without knowing what the exact disease is in your case, it is difficult to say what medication should be used. From what you say this appears to be rhinitis. You can look at this article about rhinitis: https://www.healthhype.com/rhinitis-types-and-causes-of-nasal-inflammation.html
As you can see there are many types of rhinitis, and the treatment can vary to some degree. We cannot make a diagnosis for you, neither can we prescribe or even suggest medication. It is against our website policy. That has to be done by a doctor or medical specialist with whom you consult. If you are not satisfied with your current doctor then you should consult with another for a second opinion.

Hi Aman. This sounds like perennial rhinitis which is more often due to allergies. However, there are other causes of rhinitis as well. If you have not done so yet, then you should see an ENT specialist. Unfortunately perennial rhinitis does not often resolve entirely, even with medication.

If it is due to allergies, then your doctor may do allergen testing to identify the most likely trigger. House dust mite and animal fur are the most common, but there may also be other triggers bothering you specifically.
Along with medication, a lifestyle program will have to be formulated where your exposure to these triggers is limited.

Unfortunately it is not a permanent 'cure'. The focus is on managing the symptoms with medication and limiting exposure to triggers. An ENT will be able to advise you further, and also assess for other conditions like a nasal polyp.
