Hi Kelly. Hopefully your boyfriend has sought medical attention at this point. A severe blow to the head will usually result in a concussion and the injury to the brain may present with symptoms like sleepiness, nausea and even vomiting. That requires immediate medical attention. Even though he may have recovered within a day or two there could be long term complications and he should definitely have sought medical attention at the time. If he has not, it is highly advisable that he still consults with a doctor and report this incident, even if he has little to no symptoms now.

My fiance hit him head really hard last night and I have been worried er since. First off he was slurring his words and my he fell asleep shortly after the iinjury! He woke up vomiting and has been for about 16 hours and now he is burping a foul sewage like odor! I am extremely concerned and he refuses to go to a doctor or the hospital. Does anyone know what could cause the vile puking and burping smell? And is this something that could be deadly? Could him hitting his head so hard have caused it? I am really scared and feel helpless!

Hi George. There are several investigations to detect gallbladder problems, depending on what problem your doctor suspects. This may start with an abdominal ultrasound or even an x-ray and progress to investigations like an ERCP. A lung abscess can contribute to conditions like bad breath which could have a sulfur-like odor. Investigations like a chest x-ray, CT scan or MRI may be necessary. You need to discuss these investigations with your doctor and get a referral to the relevant specialist. For example, with a gastroenterologist (for digestive conditions) or pulmonologist (for lung conditions). Remember that these investigations will only be considered if your doctor finds sufficient evidence to warrant it.

I have had the same as Jessica B. But mine have been off and on since 99', and have had it about 12-15 times maybe twice in a year once or twice. I think I've actually went over a year once or twice without it. Any ideas? J

I know this article is from about 3yrs ago but I wanted to share my experience and what I found after yrs of suffering that has finally helped.
I started having problems with sulfur burps after I had my gallbladder out several yrs ago. I could go several mos between episodes. It would always start with the sulfur burps and go to nausea, vomiting and sometimes add diarrhea. At first my dr kept telling me it was just gastroenteritis, a stomach bug basically, but almost 2yrs ago now we finally found, after having radiology testing done, where they add a tracking solution to water one day and scrambled eggs another day, they can tell how long it takes your stomach to empty. In other words, gastroparesis, slow/delayed stomach emptying, which can be caused by diabetes which I don't have, long term narcotic pain killers which I do take, and also by trauma to the abdomen by surgery like say gallbladder removal which I mentioned. (Btw, I quote these reasons for gastroparesis from memory and they may not be the only possible causes for it and my wording is not strictly medical terms, please look it up on a reputable website or ask your dr.)
A yr ago I came across an article on bezoars in the stomach (google it if you're curious) and how doctors sometimes use enzymes (namely papaya enzymes, papain, protease, bromelain etc) to break them up and I decided to try this for my stomach and it worked. Even if I've gotten the sulfur burps and nausea the enzymes have kept me from getting to the other stages. I took a dose as soon as I first got the burps and took another dose of the enzymes 2hrs later and it went away. They can be taken before you eat or after, it doesn't matter. Now I take them whenever I feel as if I may have eaten too much or know I may overindulge in a favorite food. With gastroparesis you're supposed to eat several small meals a day similar to a diabetic though there are no restrictions on the types of food you can eat though carbonated beverages aren't recommended. On another note, gastroparesis can cause blood sugar problems because of the food being delayed in leaving the stomach. As my dr told me it's a vicious cycle. Gastroparesis causes blood sugar problems and is aggravated by blood sugar problems.
I'm assuming that like bezoars the digestive enzymes break down food even if the stomach is slow to empty so that it's not producing excessive amounts of sulfur. I would think this should work even for people who don't have gastroparesis but have problems with sulfur containing foods, much like people who take products like Beano before eating gas producing foods.
I found this Probiotic Multi-Enzyme Digestive Formula at WalMart from a vitamin company they carry. In case anyone is wondering what the enzymes are listed on the label, they are: Betaine Hydrochloride, Pancreatin, Amylase, Protease (Papaya Enzyme), Bromelain, Papain (Papaya Enzyme), Pepsin, Ox Bile, Lipase, and Cellulase. My only small problem with this particular one is that it contains Lactobacillus Acidophilus (the probiotic part) which means it has to be refrigerated after the bottle's been opened and can't be carried for emergencies, not that I've ever needed it, so far, away from home for an emergency, but I'm a bit OCD about carrying everything but the kitchen sink in my purse for "what if".
Anyways, hope this helps someone else.
God bless :) Teresa

Hi Chele. You may want to follow up with a gastroenterologist. Your symptoms could be related to a condition known as gastroparesis where the stomach is not emptying properly and food is fermenting in your stomach. This is just one possibility and as you can see from the article above there are a host of other causes. However, many of these other causes would not have lasted for such a long time without presenting with additional symptoms by now.

My son was having issues with sulfur burps and diarrhea for about 8 months. FINALLY we found that 1 dose of Kaopectate gets rid of the sulfur burps almost immediately and the diarrhea subsides after about an hour or so. We believe his issue, is eating too much sugar or starch the day before. He has cut down on that as well but if he happens to have an episode, the Kaopectate takes care of it. He hasn't had one of these episodes in about a month. And before that nearly a month had passed as well. He was having these episodes every week at least once a week for the past 8 months. It was horrible.
