Hi Beverly. Leg swelling can occur for many different reasons and we cannot say for sure what may be the cause in your husband's case. Apart from conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and other vascular conditions in the leg, heart and kidney conditions should also be considered as possible causes. Of course this could be due to some injury that your husband may have sustained and the swelling may due to inflammation of the affected leg. He has to consult with a doctor who can assess his leg, take his medical history into consideration and then possibly run further tests to diagnose the most likely cause.

My wife has a swollen calve thats lasted almost 5 days. I took her to hospital, they performed a doppler ultrasound but did not find any clots. Her leg really hurts and its visibly swollen. So the doctor just gave her pain killers ad told her to wait it out. Im worried for her. What could be the cause? She hasnt had any injuries and she isnt pregnant, it just came from nowhere. Please advice.

HI Mark. A Baker's cyst would come to mind but this is only one possibility. Several joint conditions could also present with this type of swelling. We are not in a position to diagnose you and it may be worthwhile considering what your doctor has recommended. Your response to the injection is likely to help if inflammation is the underlying feature here that is leading to the swelling.

Hi Dave. Since you have been tested for DVT, the doctor would have also verified if there are any other types of circulatory disturbances which can causes swelling and bruised appearance of the skin. Muscle injuries and even tears could account for all the symptoms you describe, even surface bruising. It really is difficult to say considering that you have been already assessed by a medical professional and possible conditions like cellulitis would have been excluded by now. If you are not experiencing any improvement then you may want to consider consulting with a specialist physician.

Hi Steven. Without knowing the exact type of injury that you have sustained, it is difficult to say for sure whether this is common or not. It does not sound like just a pulled muscle so it's good that you have a doctor's appointment scheduled. While it could be related to the injury, there is the concern that this may be more circulatory related. You don't mention pain accompanying this swelling as the day progresses so it is unlikely to be entirely a musculoskeletal problem. Your doctor will be able to advise you further.

I can produce pitting along my lower leg bone. Not on my ankle or foot, and only a portion of my leg. I injured my calf either, pulled muscle, tendon, or something. I was playing soccer, and just starting to run when it happened, it was an odd injury, as there was no contact, and just running. I initially treated it as a "charlie horse" as that is what it initially felt like. However, I feel now that had made it worse. This morning I woke up and I had almost no pitting, but it is starting to show up as my day continues. I do have a Dr. Appointment for a full physical on Monday. However, at this point does it sound like a major concern? Basically, is this common for this type of injury and not resting, except 5 hours of sleep?

Hi Karen. Glad to hear that you received some confirmation. Please ensure that you are seeing a physical therapist. Having a massage for a torn muscle is not advised and can impede healing in the early stages. Your physical therapist will be able to advise your further.
