Hi ChunPapi. Being overweight can strain the joints and bones but this does not happen overnight. The fact that it is turning blue to purple is a cause for concern. This may be an indication that the blood flow through the foots is in some way impaired. However, it is difficult to pinpoint a cause just based on the symptoms you report here. You definitely should be consulting with a doctor to identify the exact cause.

Hello, I'm 17 years old and I've had a swelling issue with my foot for the past 3 days. I don't know if I injured it or not, I read somewhere that the cause could be being overweight. I walk around too much for the foot which has caused it to swell more but I don't really leave my house since it's summer so the foot is usually resting. I woke up today and it started becoming purple near my pink toe. All the pain seems to go to the side of my foot where it is very red and I can't move my last two toes there either.

I walk on my foot to get out of bed and do daily things but I also use it to go to summer school which isn't a lot of walking since I get out of my car, walk to class, stay there for 3 hours no walking, then I walk back to my car and drive home and walk inside to sit back down at my desk. I don't really know what to do with it anymore since this has never happened and the fact that it's starting to turn purple is making me uneasy. I don't even know how to elevate my foot while sleeping. Also it seems like it isn't super painful anymore to walk on it but it doesn't get any better. I just need some advice , please and thank you!

I care for a woman 80 yrs. old. She is on several medications and currently waiting to see if she can get a knee replacement. She sits in her recliner with the legs up most of the day. She has been complaining of different aches & pains for the past 2 weeks. Today her feet and shins are more swollen than usual and starting to darken. Should I have her up walking more? Should I use ice or heat? Or is this more of a concern I should get her to the hospital? She has an upcoming Dr. appt. next week.

I have a 15 year old granddaughter that is athletic. She is average weight and height. Over the last 6 months or so I have noticed that her legs and ankles are very thick. Thicker than normal for her body weight, and more than they have been every before. To me they are swollen. I ask her mother about it and she says it is because of her increase activity with athletics, but this is not muscle I am seeing. There isn't sculpting. They do not appear normal and I am concerned. We have a family history of heart disease and diabetis but my daughter thinks I mettle and I am a worry wart. My Grandson is 2 years younger and is just as active. He does NOT have the same issue. Am I right to be concerned?

Thank you for your reply.
In the past, I asked my family doctor for a referral, and further, he assisted with giving my history to all of the other doctors that I told him that I was going to see. At this point, my family doctor does not know what else to suggest.

The Lower Extremity Doctor that I visited 3 years ago said that my pulse was good and an ultrasound test showed that it was NOT circulatory and he eliminated vascular problems. He did say “possible autoimmune disorder”. He added, “MIGHT BE IN THE RAYNAUDS FAMILY”. He "may have been" a vascular doctor (I wrote down Lower Extremity doctor in my notes).

Thank you again for your reply; it is most appreciated.
I will do as you suggested and see a vascular specialist.

HI Helen. The best way to approach this is to ask your family doctor to refer you to the appropriate specialist. Your family doctor is familiar with your case and would be able to provide you with a referral letter as well to assist the specialist in understanding your medical history to date. If you are going to do this on your own without a referral then you may want to consider seeing a vascular specialist. If such a specialist is not available in your region then you should start with a specialist physician and take it from there.

Hi Sharon. It could be related if your coronary artery disease is so severe that it is affecting normal functioning of your heart. If it really was this severe then your doctor would have advised that you have surgery immediately because a heart attack could occur at any time. However, there is the possibility that it is unrelated to your coronary artery disease and it may therefore be another condition altogether. Early diagnosis and treatment is always advisable.
