Hi Kat. This is likely due to one of two conditions since the swelling is so severe and sudden. One is a blood clot blocking the blood flow in the arm. You can read more about that here – https://www.healthhype.com/blood-clot-in-leg-arm-signs-symptoms-of-thrombosis-embolism.html
The other possibility is an infection. Either condition needs to be taken seriously and a doctor needs to be consulted with immediately. There may be other conditions that could also be the cause but it is difficult to say on an online platform. Please note that we are not diagnosing your mother’s condition but simply giving you some guidance. She needs to see a doctor.

My Mother is 82 years old has dementia going into late stage but not EOL = end of life. She awoke today with her hand only swollen 3 times larger than normal; she says it doesn’t hurt. She takes her meds but not understanding to swallow them now has caused not ingesting her pills everyday as she had. Any ideas as to cause of swelling in hand only? Thank you
